Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

Renzo Piano’s National Library and Opera under a vast solar canopy, set in a sloping park with a long canal. Climb to the Lighthouse for the sea view.

National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST)

Contemporary Greek and international art in the converted Fix brewery on Syngrou Avenue.

A cultural centre for theatre, dance and talks, behind a façade of horizontal marble strips that glows at night.

Benaki Museum, Pireos 138

The Benaki’s large modern annex for changing exhibitions on art, design and architecture.

Architecture walk

Dimitris Pikionis’s 1950s stone paths up the Acropolis and Filopappou hills, laid from salvaged marble. A lesson in landscape and material.

The Academy, University and National Library, three neoclassical buildings in a row on Panepistimiou by the Hansen brothers.

Whitewashed island-style houses built by stonemasons from Anafi, tucked under the Acropolis rock. Walk quietly; people live here.

Parliament & the Evzones

The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, every hour, in front of the old royal palace.

Hills & views

Lycabettus Hill

The highest point in central Athens, with a chapel at the top and a wide view to the sea. Walk up from Kolonaki in the late afternoon.

Filopappou Hill

Pine-covered paths with the best straight-on view of the Parthenon, and a Roman monument at the summit.

A polished rock below the Acropolis gate, popular at sunset. The steps are slippery; go carefully.

Book Acropolis slots on hhticket.gr, the official site, rather than through resellers. From 1 November the Acropolis moves to winter hours, 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30).
