An artists’ town of painted houses, Serbian churches and small galleries on the Danube. Pretty with Advent lights.

Esztergom

Hungary’s largest church crowns the hill above the river, facing Slovakia across the Mária Valéria bridge.

About 1 hr by HÉV suburban train

Gödöllő Royal Palace

The Baroque palace loved by Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), with restored royal rooms. Open daily 10:00–18:00.

About 2 hr 40 min by train

Vienna

Austria’s capital and its Christmas markets by direct Railjet from Keleti station. A long but easy day.

Start early

Daylight ends around 16:00. Leave after breakfast and plan the hilltop sights first.

Book Vienna seats

Buy Railjet tickets in advance for cheaper fares and a reserved seat; bring your passport.

Dress for the river

Wind off the Danube makes it feel colder. Wear layers and shoes with grip for icy cobbles.
