Göreme
Göreme Open-Air Museum
A monastic valley of rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes; the Dark Church is the finest. Go at opening, before the tour groups. Covered by the MüzeKart.
Zelve
Zelve Open-Air Museum
Three valleys of abandoned cave houses, chapels and a rock-cut mosque, lived in until the mid-20th century.
Çavuşin
Paşabağ (Monks Valley)
Multi-capped fairy chimneys once used by hermits; an easy, short walk.
Çavuşin
Çavuşin old village
An abandoned cliff village with the ruined Church of St John the Baptist high above the new houses.
Uçhisar
Uçhisar Castle
The tallest rock in the region, honeycombed with rooms and tunnels. Open all year; climb for the widest view of the valleys.

Underground cities

Derinkuyu
Derinkuyu Underground City
The deepest underground city open to visitors, about 85 m down, with a chapel at the bottom and rolling stone doors. Narrow and low in places.
Kaymaklı
Kaymaklı Underground City
Wider and shallower than Derinkuyu, with storerooms, kitchens and stables; easier for children.

Valleys

Çavuşin
Rose Valley
Pink-streaked rock and hidden chapels; walk it late afternoon as the light warms.
Ortahisar
Red Valley
Kızılçukur’s ridges glow red at sunset; pair it with Rose Valley on one walk.
Göreme
Love Valley
Tall, smooth fairy chimneys in a wide valley between Göreme and Çavuşin.
Göreme–Uçhisar
Pigeon Valley
A footpath from Göreme to Uçhisar past carved dovecotes; about two hours one way.
Avanos–Ürgüp road
Devrent Valley
Free, roadside and full of rock shapes; children love finding the camel.

Architecture walk

Ürgüp
Kayakapı quarter
Ürgüp’s historic cave quarter, restored with care and protected by UNESCO; see how houses step up the slope.
Mustafapaşa
Mustafapaşa stone houses
Carved façades, arched courtyards and painted ceilings from the village’s Greek past.
Read the rock
Notice the dovecote windows painted white to attract pigeons, the carved light wells and rooms cut to the size of the family.
