Fourteen bastions ring the Fort. Walk the wall from the Sun and Moon bastions to the lighthouse at sunrise or sunset.

The Groote Kerk of 1755, its floor paved with old Dutch gravestones. Modest dress; quiet on Sunday mornings.

A private collection of antiques, gems and old typewriters in a Dutch house on Leyn Baan Street; a gem shop sits at the end.

A white stupa built by Japanese monks on Rumassala hill, with views over Galle harbour.

Dadella
Jetwing Lighthouse
Bawa’s 1997 hotel on a rocky headland, with Laki Senanayake’s bronze staircase of battling warriors. Visit for tea or lunch.

A 17th-century merchant’s house reworked as a hotel by Teardrop; open courtyards and cool verandas.

An 18th-century mansion and former printing works, now a small hotel with a quiet courtyard.

Architecture walk

Gates and warehouses
Start at the Old Gate, see the VOC warehouse and walk Queen’s Street past the old Dutch government buildings.
Verandas and streets
Leyn Baan, Pedlar and Church Streets: colonnaded verandas, deep eaves and courtyard houses built for sea breezes.
Faith on one walk
The Dutch Reformed Church, All Saints’, the Fort temple and the Meeran Mosque, all within a few hundred metres.
Sunset on the wall
Finish on Triton Bastion or Flag Rock as the sea turns gold.

Fort museums keep short hours and close on some public holidays, including Poya days. Go in the morning and carry cash for small entry fees.
