The leafy university campus, its art museum and a cosy town centre.

A Jersey Shore town with a boardwalk and music history. Windswept and half-closed in winter.

A riverside village of antique shops and Hudson Highland views; dress warmly for the water.

The off-season boardwalk and New York Aquarium; most rides are closed, but the sea air is bracing.

Free Smithsonian museums and monuments. A long day; an overnight is kinder.

Winter hours

Many Hudson Valley sites close or shorten hours from December to March: Storm King closes for winter and Dia Beacon opens Friday to Monday only.

Use the trains

Metro-North leaves Grand Central; NJ Transit and Amtrak leave Penn Station. Buy in the TrainTime or NJ Transit apps.

Short light

Sunset is around 4.30pm. Start early and plan the return in daylight if you can.

Weather delays

Snow and ice can disrupt trains. Check service alerts on the morning you travel.
