Shopping streets & districts

Fifth Avenue windows

The holiday window displays between Saks and Bergdorf Goodman are a December ritual. Go after dark on a weekday.

Flagship stores and independent labels across cast-iron blocks; side streets are calmer than Broadway.

Upper East Side

Designer boutiques from the 50s to the 70s; pair with a museum on the Upper East Side.

Independent fashion, vintage and design shops around Bedford Avenue and the waterfront.

Holiday market

Bryant Park Holiday Shops

Over 180 vendors around a free skating rink at the Winter Village; shops run 28 October 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Shopping centres

The Shops at Columbus Circle

Indoor shopping at Central Park’s south-west corner, with a festive atrium in December.

Lower Manhattan

Westfield World Trade Center

Shops threaded through the Oculus; a warm stop downtown.

The Shops at Hudson Yards

Seven floors of shopping and dining beside the High Line’s northern end.

Stores worth a detour

Strand Book Store

“18 miles of books” at Broadway and 12th Street since 1927; check the dollar carts outside.

MoMA Design Store

Well-made gifts and design objects; the SoHo store is larger than the museum shop.

Bergdorf Goodman

Luxury fashion and the city’s most theatrical holiday windows, at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street.

Macy’s Herald Square

The giant department store; its holiday windows and Santaland are family favourites.

Expect heavy crowds

Sales tax (8.875%) is added at the till; clothing and shoes under $110 are exempt. Ask who made a piece and where. Check materials and shipping. Bargain politely only where invited; respect fixed prices in boutiques and artisan shops.
