دليل الطعام الحلال

Oman is a Muslim country: food is halal by default, the call to prayer sets the rhythm of the day and every petrol station and mall has a place to pray.

Mosques & shrines

City centre

Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Salalah

The city’s great mosque, with a large dome, crystal chandelier and a hand-woven carpet, set in calm gardens. Dress modestly; women cover their hair.

Al Qouf

Tomb of Nabi Imran

A very long grave under a green-domed shelter, traditionally linked to Imran, father of Maryam. Visit quietly and cover up.

Jabal Ittin

Shrine of Prophet Ayoub

The tomb of Ayoub (Job) on Jabal Ittin, with a small mosque and wide views. Much quieter after the khareef crowds; space around the tomb is small.

Mirbat

Tomb of Mohammed bin Ali

A white-domed mausoleum of a 12th-century scholar, with an old cemetery, just outside Mirbat.

Prayer & practicalities

Prayer rooms

Malls, the airport and most petrol stations have a musalla. Hotels can tell you the qibla and prayer times.

Friday timings

The weekend is Friday and Saturday. Many shops close for Jumu’ah and reopen in the afternoon.

Visiting a mosque

Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Shoes off at the door, and avoid prayer times if you are sightseeing.

Family beaches

Public beaches are relaxed but conservative. Swim in modest swimwear, or use hotel beaches and pools.

Good to know

Halal by default

All meat served in Salalah restaurants is halal.

Alcohol

Served only in some licensed hotel bars and restaurants. Most local restaurants and cafés are alcohol-free.

Hotel restaurants

Licensed resort venues may cook with wine or serve alcohol at nearby tables; ask if this matters to you.

Ramadan is not this month

October 2026 has normal daytime hours for restaurants and cafés.
