Before you go
Carry cash
Bazaar shops, ćevabdžinicas, taxis and the Tunnel of Hope often take cash only. ATMs are easy to find.
Euros are not the currency
Some places accept euros, but change comes back in KM and the rate may be poor.
Wear grippy shoes
Old-town stones are slippery after rain, and the lanes to Vratnik and Alifakovac are steep.
Pack for cold nights
Days can feel warm in the sun, but October nights drop close to freezing. Bring a warm jacket.
Use the tram
Trams run the length of the valley from Baščaršija towards Ilidža. Buy and validate a ticket for each ride.
Book a reliable taxi
Use registered taxis with a meter, or ask your hotel to call one.
Ask before photos
Ask before photographing people, and be respectful at memorials and cemeteries.
Stay on marked paths
In the mountains, keep to marked trails and roads; landmines remain in some remote areas.
Talk about the war with care
Most people will share their stories if you listen. Let them lead the conversation.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival; WhatsApp is the usual way to reach drivers and guesthouses.
Clocks change
Clocks go back one hour on Sunday 25 October 2026, so evenings get dark earlier.
Sarajevo is a safe and friendly city for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in crowded spots, and check the entry rules for your passport before you travel.
