Jordan is a Muslim-majority country with a long-established Christian community. Halal food is the norm, mosques are everywhere and Friday is the weekly holiday.
Malls, the airport and most large hotels have a musalla. At Petra and Wadi Rum, small mosques sit in the villages near the entrances.
Friday timings
Jumu’ah is around midday. Downtown shops often open late on Fridays, and Friday and Saturday are the weekend.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. King Abdullah I Mosque lends robes to visitors. Shoes off at the door.
Qibla
Mecca lies roughly south-south-east from Amman; hotel rooms usually mark the direction.
Good to know
Halal is the norm
Meat in ordinary Jordanian restaurants, shawarma stands and grills is halal. Ask in hotel and international restaurants, where pork occasionally appears.
Alcohol
Licensed bars and many upscale restaurants in Amman serve alcohol. Downtown cafés, traditional restaurants and sweet shops are alcohol-free.
Easy alcohol-free choices
Hashem, Al Quds, Habibah and the shawarma stands are all dry; Jasmine House serves no wine.
Ramadan is not this month
November 2026 has normal daytime hours for restaurants and cafés.
