Before you go

Check your entry rules
Visa rules differ by passport. Many visitors get a visa on arrival, or have it waived by the Jordan Pass after three nights.
Use ride-hailing
Careem and Uber work well in Amman. Yellow taxis are cheap; ask the driver to use the meter.
Pack layers
Amman evenings drop to around 10°C and Wadi Rum nights can be colder. Bring a warm jacket and good walking shoes.
Wear proper shoes for Petra
Expect 15–20 km of walking on sand, stone and steps in a full day.
Dress modestly
Cover shoulders and knees downtown and at religious sites; Abdoun and Abdali are more relaxed.
Friday rhythm
Friday and Saturday are the weekend. Downtown is quiet on Friday morning, then busy after midday prayers.
Carry some cash
Cards work in hotels, malls and restaurants; carry dinars for falafel stands, taxis and souq stalls.
Ask before photos
Ask before photographing people, especially women, and avoid military and government buildings.
Drive with care
Amman traffic is fast and the hills are steep. For the south, hire a car or a driver; roads are good but unlit at night.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport. WhatsApp is the easiest way to reach hotels, drivers and camps.
Jordan is welcoming and generally safe for visitors. Follow your government’s travel advice, carry your passport on trips south and expect police checkpoints on the highways.
