Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
Athens has one official mosque and a small, mostly South Asian and Arab community around Omonia. Greece has no national halal certification body, so plan meals with care and ask directly.

Prayer & practicalities

Getting to the mosque
Votanikos is west of the centre, beyond Kerameikos; a taxi from Syntagma is the simplest way to reach Iera Odos.
Prayer on the go
Prayer rooms are rare in Athens museums and malls. A compass app and a light mat let you pray in a park or hotel room.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Shoes off at the door.

Good to know

Ask every time
With no national certification, halal status rests on the owner’s word. Ask about the meat and whether the kitchen uses wine or lard.
Pork is everywhere
Gyros and souvlaki are often pork, and many pies and mezze use pork or cured meat. Assume nothing.
Seafood and vegetables
Greek tavernas excel at grilled fish, octopus, salads, beans and vegetable dishes; these make easy meals almost anywhere.
Alcohol
Wine and ouzo are served almost everywhere. Ask for wine-free sauces; desserts are usually safe.
Ramadan is not this month
October 2026 has normal daytime hours for restaurants and cafés.
