The December plate

Kürtőskalács by the fire
Chimney cake rolled in cinnamon sugar or walnuts and baked over coals at every Advent market. Eat it warm, then try bejgli, the poppy-seed and walnut roll of a Hungarian Christmas.
Muslim traveller note: goulash and most Hungarian classics are made with pork lard or pork. At fine-dining restaurants, ask for a pork-free, alcohol-free menu when booking; at the markets, chimney cake and lángos are usually the safest choices.
