Eat Colmar

Gingerbread, bredele and a covered market by the canal

Christmas tastes to try

Pain d’épices
Iced with sugar or chocolate, soft with honey, or filled with chocolate or almond cream. The classic Colmar gift.
Bredele
Dozens of small Christmas biscuits: spirals, crescents, macaroons and cinnamon stars.
Manala
A buttery brioche shaped like a little man, for Saint Nicholas on 6 December. Perfect with hot chocolate.
Springerle
Anise biscuits pressed in carved wooden moulds; almost too pretty to eat.
Christstollen
A brioche with candied fruit and cinnamon, filled with almond cream. Ask about rum or kirsch.
Roasted chestnuts
Hot from a stall in a paper cone; simple and warming.

Know the classics
Choucroute, baeckeoffe and tarte flambée are made with pork and often wine. Ask for vegetarian or fish versions, or eat at the halal restaurants in the Muslim notes.
Muslim traveller note: most Colmar restaurants are traditional and pork-heavy. Fish, vegetarian dishes and the halal places are your best options; ask about lardons, wine and gelatine.
