Before you go

Book early
Colmar has few hotels for its December crowds; book rooms months ahead, or stay in Strasbourg and come by train.
Market hours
Monday to Thursday 11:00–19:00, Friday to Sunday 10:00–20:00. On 24 December 11:00–17:00; on 25 and 26 December 10:00–20:00.
Check the crowd forecast
noel-colmar.com publishes expected busy days; weekday mornings are the calmest.
Car-free centre
The old town is closed to traffic during market hours. Park outside and walk.
Village shuttles
Christmas shuttles link Colmar with the wine villages on market days; check times before you go.
Dress for frost
Expect 0–6°C and icy cobbles in the mornings. Warm layers, gloves and shoes with grip.
26 December is a holiday
In Alsace, 26 December is a public holiday as well as Christmas Day.
Cards and coins
Cards work at most chalets; carry coins for toilets and small stalls.
Service is included
Restaurant prices include service; rounding up is enough.
Hire a car for villages
Rental makes village-hopping easy, but parking fills fast at weekends.
Visit Strasbourg by train
Regional trains run often and take about 30 minutes; no reservation needed.
Watch your bags
Pickpockets work the busiest squares at weekends.
Colmar is calm and safe, but crowds draw pickpockets. Check the entry rules for your passport before you travel.
