Before you go

Get an ETA
Most visitors, including Gulf passport holders, need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling. Apply on the official GOV.UK site only.
Layers, not one coat
A waterproof shell over a warm layer copes with sun, wind and rain in the same afternoon.
Good shoes
Cobbles, closes and steep stairs are everywhere in the Old Town. Leave smooth soles at home.
Tap to pay
Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, including buses and trams.
Use the tram and buses
The tram links the airport, Princes Street and Leith; Lothian Buses cover the rest of the city.
Book the big sights
Timed tickets for the Castle, Mary King’s Close and Parliament tours sell out at weekends and over half-term.
Clocks go back
On Sunday 25 October the UK returns to GMT; sunset jumps an hour earlier.
Scottish banknotes
Scottish banks print their own pound notes. They are valid in the UK but can be hard to change abroad; spend them before you leave.
Hill safety
Arthur’s Seat is steep and slippery in the wet. Keep children close on the crags and come down before dark.
Tap water
Scottish tap water is safe and good to drink; carry a refillable bottle.
Edinburgh is a safe, friendly city. Take normal care with bags on the Royal Mile and at Waverley, and check the UK entry rules for your passport before you travel.
