Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
Galle has an old Muslim community, long tied to the gem trade and the sea. The Fort has its own Friday mosque, and Muslim-run shops line its streets.

Prayer & practicalities

Friday prayers
Jumu’ah at Meeran Mosque is around midday; some Muslim-run shops in the Fort close for an hour.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Shoes off at the door.
Prayer spaces
Few attractions have prayer rooms. Hotels will usually give you a quiet room and point out the qibla (roughly north-west).
Colombo airport
Bandaranaike International has prayer rooms in the departure area.

Good to know

Look for HAC
The Halal Assessment Council (HAC) certifies restaurants and suppliers in Sri Lanka; certified places display the certificate. Check hac.lk.
Seafood is your friend
Fish, prawn and crab curries and grilled catch of the day are on every menu. Ask for no wine in sauces at international places.
Vegetarian rice and curry
Dhal, jackfruit, beetroot and pumpkin curries make a full, filling meal.
Alcohol
Many Fort restaurants and hotels are licensed. Alcohol sales stop on Poya (full-moon) days, including 23 December.
Halal options in Galle are real but limited, and certification is rare. Many Muslim-owned restaurants follow halal practice without a certificate, so ask politely; staff are used to the question.
