Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
Vietnam is not a Muslim country and pork is central to Hanoi’s cooking. Halal food exists but takes planning: one kitchen near Dong Xuan Market, a cluster along Xuan Dieu in West Lake, plus seafood and vegetarian options.

Prayer & practicalities

Friday prayers
Jumu’ah at Al-Noor is the main gathering of the week; arrive early as the prayer hall is small.
Prayer spaces are rare
Malls, museums and the airport do not usually have a musalla. Carry a light mat and a compass app; hotel rooms are the easiest option.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Shoes off at the door.

Good to know

Halal is not the default
Most meat is not halal, and pork, lard and pork stock appear in many dishes, including some that look meat-free.
Seafood and vegetarian
Vegetarian (chay) restaurants are common because of the Buddhist tradition, and fish and seafood dishes are everywhere. Ask about pork stock and fish sauce suits most diets.
A useful phrase
“Không có thịt lợn” means “no pork”. Show it written on your phone; staff are used to dietary requests.
Alcohol
Beer is sold everywhere, including on the busiest food streets. Cafés and juice bars are easy alcohol-free options for evenings out.
