Beyond Kuala Lumpur
One extra day can change your trip
A planned capital, a mountain resort and cool tea hills. Times are estimates, each way from central KL.
Day trips
45 min–1 hr by train + taxi
Putrajaya
Malaysia’s government city: the pink Putra Mosque, Putra Square, the lake bridges and the 92-hectare botanical garden. KLIA Transit from KL Sentral (RM16.60 from January 2027), then a taxi.

1–1½ hr by road
Genting Highlands
A hilltop resort with the Genting SkyWorlds theme park, indoor rides and cooler air. The Awana SkyWay cable car takes about 10 minutes and stops at the Chin Swee Caves Temple.
Save
4–5 hr by bus from TBS
Cameron Highlands
Tea estates, strawberry farms and misty hills. The BOH Sungei Palas tea garden opens Tue–Sun, 8:30–16:30. Too far for a day: stay two nights.

Melaka
The UNESCO-listed port town of Dutch, Portuguese and Peranakan streets; long but doable as a day.

Good to know
Leave early
Mountain roads are slow and January afternoons can bring storms and mist.
Book a driver
For Putrajaya with children, a half-day Grab or private driver beats juggling train and taxis.
Pack a layer
Genting and Cameron Highlands are much cooler than the city, especially after rain.
Check the SkyWay
Cable cars can pause for maintenance or bad weather; check before you set off.
