Good to know
Car hire
Roads are excellent and signposted in English. An international driving permit may be needed; check with your hire company.
4x4 for the mountains
The Jebel Akhdar police checkpoint turns back non-4x4 cars. Hire a 4x4 or book a driver.
Wadi safety
Never enter a wadi when rain is forecast upstream; flash floods arrive fast, even under blue sky.
Desert driving
Do not drive into dunes without experience. Let your camp collect you from the edge of the sands.
Dress for villages
Cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages; swimwear only in the wadi pools, with a cover-up.
