Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
New York has a large, varied Muslim community and easy halal food in most boroughs. Check prayer times with each mosque before visiting.

Check halal status

Halal carts
A “halal” sign does not guarantee certification. Ask about the meat supplier; reputable carts will tell you.
Zabihah
zabihah.com lists restaurants and mosques with community reviews; check dates on reviews and halal notes.
HFSAA
The Halal Food Standards Alliance of America certifies hand-slaughtered meat and lists certified restaurants and shops.
IFANCA
IFANCA’s crescent-M symbol appears on packaged foods; useful for snacks and supermarket shopping.

Good to know

Best areas
Astoria’s Steinway Street, Jackson Heights, Bay Ridge and Midtown’s cart corners have the easiest halal options.
Ask the restaurant
Confirm meat sourcing, alcohol in sauces and shared grills or fryers, even at Middle Eastern places.
Prayer on the go
Hotel staff can often find a quiet room. Large parks and museums rarely have dedicated prayer spaces.
Muslim traveller note: December daylight is short, so prayer times sit close together; Maghrib comes around 4.30pm. Keep a prayer app set to New York time and check Jumu’ah times each week.
