Before you go

Tap with OMNY
Tap a contactless card or phone at subway gates and on buses. Fares cap after 12 rides in seven days on the same card.
Tip properly
Leave 18–22% at sit-down restaurants and around 15–20% for taxis. Tips are expected, not optional extras.
Tax comes later
Prices exclude sales tax of 8.875%, added at the till. Hotel taxes add more to room rates.
Check entry rules
Many visitors need an ESTA or visa. Apply only on the official US government site, well before you fly.
Dress for wind
Wind between towers makes 2°C feel much colder. Bring a warm coat, hat, gloves and waterproof shoes.
Walk like a local
Keep right, keep moving and step aside to check your phone or map.
Driving into Manhattan
Congestion pricing charges cars $9 at peak times to enter Manhattan below 60th Street. Public transport is easier.
Stay aware
Keep bags closed in crowds, use official taxis or apps and ignore costumed characters asking for tips in Times Square.
Book ahead
Timed tickets for museums, observation decks and skating sell out around Christmas and New Year.
Holiday closures
Many museums close on 25 December and 1 January; restaurants may run set menus. Check before you go.
Stay connected
Set up an eSIM before arrival; free Wi-Fi is in many parks, libraries and subway stations.
Public toilets
They are scarce. Use museums, department stores, Bryant Park’s restrooms and hotel lobbies.
Plan a safe return: after late shows, use well-lit stations or a licensed taxi, and keep emergency numbers and your hotel address saved offline.
