Before you go

Use ride-hailing apps
Grab and Bolt show the fare in advance. Local taxis and tuk-tuks rarely use meters, so agree the price first.
Think twice about scooters
Roads are steep and busy, and many travel insurance policies exclude scooter accidents without a proper licence.
Dress for where you are
Swimwear belongs on the beach. Cover up in town, and cover shoulders and knees in temples and mosques.
Respect the monarchy
Criticising the Thai royal family is a serious crime. Stand for the royal anthem before cinema screenings.
Sun and sea
December sun is strong: swim early, rest at midday and reapply sunscreen. Respect red flags.
Boat safety
Ask for life jackets in the right sizes for children before you board, and avoid overcrowded boats.
Cash for small places
Cards work in malls and resorts; markets, roti shops and longtail boats want cash.
Stay connected
Buy a tourist SIM or eSIM at the airport; LINE and WhatsApp are used for bookings.
Book December early
Christmas and New Year are Phuket’s busiest weeks; book hotels, transfers and popular restaurants months ahead.
Ask before photos
Ask before photographing people, especially in Muslim villages and at mosques.
Vapes and drugs
Vaping is illegal in Thailand and fines are heavy. Cannabis rules have tightened; stay away from it.
Check entry rules
Gulf passport holders can usually enter visa-free; check the latest rules and any digital arrival card before flying.
Phuket is generally safe and welcoming. The main risks are road traffic and the sea, so take taxis at night and swim where lifeguards are on duty.
