Why Prague?
Spires · bridges · markets · coffee houses · design
Cold, often grey days near freezing, with sunset before 16:00. Plan indoor stops and let the lights do the work after dark.
What makes it special
A textbook of architecture
Romanesque cellars, Gothic towers, Baroque churches, Art Nouveau cafés, Cubist houses and Functionalist villas, all within a few tram stops.
Cubism you can walk into
Prague is the only city where Cubism became buildings, furniture and even a lamppost. Look for the angled façades of Gočár and Janák.
Christmas markets on great squares
Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square fill with wooden stalls from late November into January, with a tall tree at the centre.
A walkable old centre
Old Town, Malá Strana and the Castle are linked by bridges and stairs. Good shoes matter more than taxis.
Coffee-house culture
Grand cafés from the 1900s and 1920s serve cake and hot chocolate under chandeliers; ideal shelter from the cold.
Views from every hill
Prague Castle, Letná, Petřín and Vyšehrad each give a different panorama of the river and its spires.
Good value
Public transport, cafés and museums cost less than in most Western European capitals.
Easy links onwards
Trains reach Kutná Hora in an hour and Dresden in about two, so day trips are simple.
