Before you go
Entry for GCC citizens
Citizens of GCC countries enter Saudi Arabia with their national ID card.
GCC residents
Residents of GCC countries can apply online for a Saudi e-visa. Check eligibility on the official visa portal before booking.
Dress modestly
Cover shoulders and knees in public; women cover their hair in mosques. Loose, long clothes are most comfortable.
Ramadan manners
No eating, drinking or smoking in public during fasting hours, and keep music low.
Use the metro
Six driverless lines cover the city, including the Yellow Line to the airport and KAFD.
Taxis
Uber, Careem and metered taxis are the easiest way to reach Diriyah and the edges of the city.
The weekend
The Saudi weekend is Friday–Saturday; Friday mornings are quiet until after Jumu’ah.
No alcohol
Alcohol is banned. Do not bring it in, even in your luggage.
Photography
Ask before photographing people, especially women and families, and avoid government and military buildings.
Cool evenings
February nights are cold by Gulf standards; bring a jacket for Diriyah and the desert.
Cards everywhere
Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere; keep some riyals for small shops.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport; WhatsApp is the easiest way to confirm bookings.
Riyadh is safe and welcoming. Laws and customs are conservative; follow local rules, and check entry requirements for your passport before you travel.
