One extra day can change your trip

Wildlife parks, fells, ski villages and the frozen Gulf of Bothnia. Times are estimates, each way from Rovaniemi; roads are snowy, so allow extra time.

Ranua Wildlife Park

About 50 Arctic and northern species, including polar bears, brown bears and wolverines, along snowy forest paths. Open daily 10:00–16:00.

About 1½ hr by car or train

Icebreaker Sampo

A 3½–4-hour cruise through sea ice from Kemi, with a walk on the frozen sea and a float in the icy water in a survival suit. The 2026–27 season runs from 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027.

Pyhä-Luosto National Park

Fell tops, deep gorges and snowshoe trails, with ski slopes at both Pyhä and Luosto.

Lampivaara Amethyst Mine

A working amethyst mine on a fell near Luosto, where visitors can dig for a stone; reached on foot or by snowmobile sled in winter. Open daily from 1 December 2026, with tours at 12:00 and 15:00 from the Lampivaara café.

Finland’s biggest ski resort, with a lively village, family slopes and Christmas programmes.

Guided minibus or snowmobile trips drive away from city lights; choose a small group and check the cancellation policy.

Snowmobile and ice fishing

Most safari companies supply thermal overalls, boots and mittens. Children usually ride in a sled pulled by the guide’s snowmobile.

Choose safari companies with insurance and proper winter clothing included.

Drive with care

Roads are icy and dark by mid-afternoon; rental cars come with studded or winter tyres. Watch for reindeer on the road.

Start early

Leave at first light (around 10:00) to make the most of the few bright hours.

Check the cold

At −30°C some tours are shortened or cancelled for safety; keep a flexible day.
