Before you go

Dress in three layers
Thermal base layer (wool, not cotton), a fleece or wool mid-layer and a windproof, insulated outer layer. Add a hat, buff and two pairs of gloves.
Boots matter most
Insulated, waterproof boots with good grip and room for thick wool socks. Many tours lend overalls and boots; ask when booking.
Rent rather than buy
Several shops and safari companies rent full winter outfits for adults and children; useful if you will not need them at home.
Protect skin
Use a rich, water-free cream on faces in the cold and lip balm. Water-based moisturiser can freeze on the skin.
Phones die in the cold
Keep phones and power banks in an inside pocket; batteries drain fast below −15°C.
Walk carefully
Pavements are icy. Shoe grips (spikes) are sold in supermarkets and make a real difference.
Wear a reflector
It is dark most of the day. Finns wear small reflectors on coats and bags; children especially should have one.
Book early
December is peak season: reserve flights, Santa visits, safaris and dinners well ahead.
Aurora tips
Check the aurora and cloud forecasts, go out between 21:00 and 01:00 and give your eyes time to adjust. Clear skies matter more than the forecast number.
Cards everywhere
Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, even for small amounts.
Sauna etiquette
Shower first, sit on a towel and cool down outside. Private sauna slots are easy to book in hotels and cabins.
Christmas closures
On 24–26 December many shops, restaurants and museums close or shorten hours; book Christmas meals in advance.
Rovaniemi is very safe; the main risks are cold, ice and darkness. Follow your guide’s instructions on safaris, stay on marked trails and check Schengen entry rules for your passport before you travel.
