Culture, design & architecture
Choose what to see — don’t try to see everything
Do not overpack museum days: fewer stops and more outdoor breaks.
The old town

Begun in 1077 and one of Europe’s great castles. The funicular, running since 1892, climbs to the courtyards, Gothic princes’ rooms of 1501 and wide views. Daily 09:30–17:00 in winter; adults €15.50–19.20.

Leopoldskron-Moos
Leopoldskron lake
The film’s lakeside terrace scenes were shot beside this 1736 palace. See the house across the small lake; the palace itself is a hotel.

South Salzburg
Hellbrunn Park
The palace and trick fountains are closed until late March, but the park and the neighbouring zoo make a gentle winter walk.

Modern architecture
Mönchsberg
Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg
A 2004 museum on the cliff top, clad in Untersberg marble, with one of the best views of the domes and fortress.

Wrought-iron signs
Getreidegasse’s guild signs and narrow passages (Durchhäuser) are some of the most photographed details in Austria.
Hallstatt
2–2½ hr from Salzburg
Hallstatt village
A UNESCO-listed salt town of fewer than 800 people between the lake and the Dachstein. In winter the lanes are quiet and the roofs often snowy.
Save
Hallstatt
Bone House (Beinhaus)
In St. Michael’s Chapel above the village: more than 1,200 skulls, about 600 painted with names and flowers, from a time when the churchyard ran out of room.
