Knives and ceramics

Kappabashi and the Tsukiji outer market sell handmade knives. Ask for engraving, and pack them in checked luggage.

Ask who made a piece and where. Check materials and shipping. Bargain politely only where invited; respect fixed prices in boutiques and artisan shops. From 1 November 2026, Japan’s tax-free shopping switches to a refund system: you pay tax at the till and claim it back when you leave. Keep receipts and your passport ready.
