Before you go

Wiener Linien tickets
Buy single, 24, 48 or 72-hour and weekly passes in the WienMobil app or at machines. Validate paper tickets.
Use WienMobil
The official app plans routes, sells tickets and shows live departures for trams, buses and U-Bahn.
Sunday closures
Most shops close on Sundays; museums, cafés and markets stay open. Stations and the airport have supermarkets.
Carry some cash
Cards are widely accepted, but small market stalls and some cafés prefer cash.
Tipping
Round up about 10% and tell the server the total as you pay, rather than leaving coins on the table.
Dress for the cold
Expect around 0–4°C with wind and drizzle. Layer up, with warm shoes for cobbles.
24 December
Shops close early afternoon and many restaurants close for the evening. Book Christmas Eve dinner well ahead.
25–26 December
Both are public holidays; shops close and some restaurants shut. Museums and markets vary.
Market mug deposit
Drinks come in a souvenir mug with a deposit (Häferlpfand); return it for your money back.
Monday closures
Some museums close on Mondays outside peak periods; check each one before planning.
Book December ahead
Schönbrunn tours, Spanish Riding School and concerts sell out; reserve popular restaurants too.
Drink the tap water
Vienna’s water comes from Alpine springs; coffee houses serve a glass with every coffee.
Pickpockets work crowded markets and the U-Bahn in December. Keep bags closed, and use only licensed taxis or apps at night.
