Coffee in Vienna
Vienna’s coffee houses are living rooms with marble tables, newspapers and unhurried waiters, where a single coffee buys you an afternoon.
Mariahilf, 6th district
Café Sperl
Little has changed in the furnishings since this coffee house opened in 1880, from the billiard tables to the house Sperl torte. Piano music plays on Sunday afternoons, 15:30 to 17:30.

Café Hawelka
Opened in 1936 by Josefine and Leopold Hawelka a few steps from Stephansplatz, and a meeting place for artists and writers ever since. Order a coffee with the famous Buchteln, warm jam-filled yeast buns.

Stubenring, Innere Stadt
Café Prückel
A corner coffee house on the Ringstrasse whose 1950s interior was designed by architect Oswald Haerdtl, himself a regular. A calm, airy alternative to the busier cafés in the old town.

Kohlmarkt, Innere Stadt
Demel
The former imperial and royal confectioner on Kohlmarkt, where Empress Elisabeth enjoyed the pastries. Take a coffee with a slice of cake; it is especially busy in the Christmas season, so go early.
