لماذا صلالة؟
Hills · springs · frankincense · beaches · ruins
The khareef officially ended on 21 September. What follows is sunnier and drier, with green slopes, running springs and fresh local fruit.
What makes it special
Green after the rains
The Dhofar mountains stay green for weeks after the monsoon, a rare sight in Arabia.
The land of frankincense
Frankincense trees, ancient incense ports and a museum devoted to the trade, all within an hour’s drive.
Coconut palms and banana groves
Central Salalah feels tropical, with plantations and roadside fruit stalls along the beach road.
Springs and wadis
Ain Razat, Ain Hamran and Wadi Darbat are shaded, cool places for a picnic.
Long, empty beaches
White sand runs for kilometres either side of the city, with dramatic coves towards Mughsail.
Calm after the crowds
The khareef crowds have gone home, so roads, hotels and viewpoints are quieter.
Easy with children
Short drives, open spaces, a water park at Hawana and plenty of picnic spots.
Desert on the doorstep
Cross the mountains and you reach the gravel plains at the edge of the Empty Quarter.
