Mosques & Muslim traveller notes
Practical notes for prayer on the road
All food in AlUla is halal and there is no alcohol. What needs planning is prayer during long excursions and Friday timings.
Mosques in the Old Town
Old Town
Al-Izam Mosque
The “Mosque of the Bones”, rebuilt in stone and mud at the foot of the Old Town, on a site associated by tradition with the Prophet’s ﷺ passage through AlUla.

Prayer & practicalities
Prayer on excursions
Hegra, Elephant Rock and the visitor centres have prayer areas, and guides will pause for prayer if you ask. Carry a light mat for desert stops.
Short days
Sunset is around 5.30pm in November, so Asr and Maghrib fall close together on afternoon tours. Use a prayer app and plan around them.
Friday timings
Jumu’ah is around midday. Plan Friday tours for the morning or after prayer.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Shoes off at the door, and step in quietly between prayers.
Good to know
Halal everywhere
All meat served in AlUla is halal, and no venue serves alcohol.
Umrah or Madinah
Madinah is a long but easy drive away; see Beyond AlUla for a day or overnight visit.
Ramadan is not this month
November 2026 has normal daytime hours for restaurants and cafés.
