Athens with children

A stroller-friendly rhythm matters more than chasing every attraction
Ancient sites are rocky and steep; mix them with parks, the sea and short museum visits.

Attractions

Palaio Faliro
Eugenides Planetarium
Dome shows and hands-on science at the Eugenides Foundation; its family programme runs until 1 November.
Spata
Attica Zoological Park
A large zoo near the airport that began as a bird park; allow half a day.
Pangrati
Panathenaic Stadium
Children love running a lap of the marble track and standing on the winners’ podium.
Thissio
Stoa of Attalos museum
A gentle first archaeology visit: everyday objects of the ancient city in a cool colonnade.

Parks & the sea

Kallithea
Stavros Niarchos Park
Lawns, playgrounds, a long canal and a gentle hill with sea views; free and easy with buggies.
Syntagma
National Garden
Shady paths, ponds with ducks and turtles and a playground behind Parliament.
Palaio Faliro
Flisvos Marina promenade
A flat seaside walk with yachts, playgrounds and cafés, reached by tram.
Vouliagmeni
Lake Vouliagmeni
A warm brackish lake under a cliff, with gentle entry, loungers and a café. Pleasant for a calm October swim.
Pavements in Plaka and on the hills are uneven; a baby carrier beats a buggy at the ancient sites. Bring hats and water even in October.
