Culture, design & architecture
Choose what to see — don’t try to see everything
Do not overpack museum days: fewer stops and more outdoor breaks.
The Old City
Old City
Maiden Tower
The 29-metre stone tower of uncertain age that became Baku’s symbol. Climb to the roof for the Old City and the sea.

Old City
Palace of the Shirvanshahs
The 15th-century palace complex on the Old City’s highest point: courtyards, a mosque, mausoleums and a bathhouse in honey-coloured stone.

The walled city inside its double gate: caravanserais, small mosques and carpet shops along stone lanes.

Modern architecture & design
Heydar Aliyev Avenue
Heydar Aliyev Center
Zaha Hadid Architects, completed in 2012: one continuous white surface rising from the plaza into the roof with no hard edge. Walk all the way round before going in; the shell is a lesson in how a fold becomes a building.

Three curved glass towers of 2007–2013 above the bay, covered in LEDs that turn them into flames after dark.

Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum
A building shaped like a rolled carpet on the Boulevard, holding one of the world’s great carpet collections, with weaving demonstrations.

Land of fire
About 25 km north
Yanar Dag
A hillside where natural gas has burned for decades. Go at dusk, when the flames look brightest; it is very windy, so wrap up.
Save
Surakhani, about 30 km
Ateshgah Fire Temple
A walled courtyard of cells around a fire altar, once used by fire-worshipping pilgrims and traders. A combined ticket with Yanar Dag is available.

Old City to the sea
Enter through the double gate, climb to the Shirvanshahs’ palace, drop past Maiden Tower and cross to the Boulevard.
Boom-era Baku
Walk Nizami Street and the streets round Fountain Square for the ornate oil-boom façades of the early 1900s.
Hadid at golden hour
Come to the Heydar Aliyev Center in late afternoon, when low winter light shows every curve of the shell.
Evenings
Flame Towers light show
Boulevard walk
Fountain Square
Tea in the Old City
Yanar Dag after dark
Many museums close one day a week, often Monday. Check hours before you go, and bring cash in manat for smaller sites.
