Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
Azerbaijan is a Muslim-majority country, mostly Shia with a Sunni minority. Halal meat is the default in local restaurants, though alcohol is widely sold.

Halal food

Local restaurants
Azerbaijani restaurants serve halal lamb, beef and chicken as standard, without certificates. Pork is rare and appears in some Russian-style and international places.
Çayxanas
Traditional teahouses serve tea, jam and sweets and no alcohol.

Prayer & practicalities

Friday
Taza Pir and the Juma Mosque fill for Friday prayer; arrive early and avoid sightseeing visits at that hour.
Visiting a mosque
Cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. Headscarves are often lent at the entrance. Shoes off.
Shia and Sunni
Most mosques follow Shia practice; the Martyrs’ Mosque is Sunni. Everyone is welcome to pray.
Ask about alcohol
Wine is on most menus. Its presence doesn’t make the food non-halal, but ask if it is used in cooking.
