How winter closures work
Gudauri–Kobi is the weak link
The section over the Jvari Pass, between Gudauri and Kobi, is the one most often closed to all vehicles in heavy snow, avalanche risk or poor visibility. Closures last hours or days.
Who announces them
The Roads Department of Georgia publishes restrictions on its website and they are widely reported in Georgian news. Check the evening before and again in the morning.
What it means for you
When the pass is shut, Kazbegi is cut off from Gudauri. The road from Tbilisi up to Gudauri is usually open, but can also face delays in storms.
Chains and drivers
Chains are needed in winter. Hire a local driver with a 4x4 rather than driving yourself, and expect queues of lorries heading for the Russian border.
