Mosques & Muslim traveller notes

Halal food finder
Interlaken has more halal food than most Alpine towns, mostly Indian, Pakistani and Lebanese kitchens in the centre. Up in the mountain villages there is very little, so pack lunches or choose fish and vegetarian dishes.

Prayer & practicalities

Mosques nearby
A small community mosque is listed at Waldeggstrasse 61 in Matten, on the edge of Interlaken. Confirm Friday prayer times locally before you go.
Check before going
Pray in your room
Most families pray at the hotel. Pack a travel mat and a compass app; the qibla from Interlaken is roughly south-east.
Short winter days
Sunset comes around 5pm in January, so Dhuhr, Asr and Maghrib sit close together. Plan mountain days so you are back in the valley for Maghrib.

Good to know

Halal is not the default
Ordinary Swiss restaurants are not halal, and pork, bacon and ham appear on many menus. Mountain restaurants rarely have halal meat.
Fondue and wine
Classic cheese fondue is made with white wine and often a splash of kirsch. Ask whether an alcohol-free version is possible, or choose raclette.
Halal groceries
Arabische und Persische Supermarkt on Marktgasse sells halal chicken, beef and lamb plus Middle Eastern groceries; useful with an apartment kitchen.
Ramadan is not this month
January 2027 has normal restaurant hours; Ramadan begins in February.
