The big events

22 January: Thaipusam
A public holiday in Kuala Lumpur. Hindu devotees walk to Batu Caves carrying milk pots and kavadis, some with pierced skin, and the caves draw enormous crowds. Go to watch respectfully, or visit Batu Caves on another day for a calm climb.
6 February: Chinese New Year
The Year of the Goat begins just after January. Malls fill with red lanterns and lion-dance shows in the weeks before; expect some Chinese-run shops to close for a few days around the holiday.
