Before you go

Expect rain
January sits in the north-east monsoon. Carry a compact umbrella and plan indoor afternoons.
Use Grab
Ride-hailing is cheap and shows the fare upfront; it is easier than hailing taxis.
Get a transit card
A Touch ’n Go card covers the LRT, MRT and monorail; buy and top up at stations.
The airport train price rises
From 1 January 2027 the KLIA Ekspres costs RM65 one-way for adults and RM29 for ages 6–15; under-6s ride free.
No adaptor from Kuwait
Malaysia uses the same three-pin (type G) plug as Kuwait.
Dress modestly
Shorts are fine in malls, but cover arms and legs for mosques and temples.
Bottled or filtered water
Drink bottled or filtered water; hotels usually provide it.
Tipping
Not expected. Check the bill for a service charge; small change for good service is appreciated.
Strict drug laws
Drug offences carry very severe penalties, including for small amounts.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport with your passport; WhatsApp is used everywhere.
Mind the macaques
At Batu Caves and the forest parks, keep food and plastic bags out of sight.
Cool inside
Malls, trains and cinemas are strongly air-conditioned; bring a light layer for children.
KL is generally safe. Watch for bag snatching on busy pavements, keep valuables close in crowds and use licensed transport at night.
