Hand-drawn batik and gold-thread songket make lasting gifts; ask whether a piece is hand-made or printed.
Ask who made a piece and where. Check materials and shipping. Bargain politely only where invited; respect fixed prices in boutiques and artisan shops. Malls have fixed prices; in markets, gentle bargaining is normal.
