The big events

Mawlid of Abu al-Haggag
Luxor’s great Sufi festival is held in Sha’ban, about two weeks before Ramadan, which puts it in late January 2027. Expect processions with boat-shaped floats, music and stick dancing around Luxor Temple. Exact dates are announced locally.

School holiday crowds
Late January is busy with families from the Gulf and Europe. Book cruises, Abu Simbel flights and Valley of the Kings mornings early.

Also this month

The best weather of the year
Highs around 23°C and almost no rain, with about 290 hours of sunshine across the month.
Cold dawns
Lows near 7°C in Luxor make balloon mornings and the drive to Abu Simbel chilly. Bring a jacket.
Short days
Sunset is around 5.30pm, so plan tombs and temples for the morning and save souqs and the river for the evening.
