Before you go

Check your visa
Rules vary by passport; check the official Egyptian e-visa rules for your nationality before you fly.
Valley of the Kings tickets
Buy the main ticket plus any special tombs at the visitor centre; Tutankhamun and Seti I are separate. Flash is never allowed in tombs.
Balloon safety
Flights are regulated by Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority and are cancelled in strong wind. Choose an established operator, confirm the company and pilot, and check that your insurance covers ballooning.
Landings can be bumpy
Expect a dawn pickup around 4–5am, about 45–60 minutes in the air and a crouched landing position. Not ideal for anyone with back problems or for small children.
Choosing a cruise
Get the ship name, nights, direction, sightseeing and meal plan in writing. Luxor–Aswan is usually 4 nights, Aswan–Luxor 3; departure days vary by ship.
On board
Ask whether Day 1 sightseeing happens before sailing, whether entry tickets are included, and how the Esna lock may change times.
Philae boats
Boats to Philae are paid separately at the pier; agree the price for the return trip and waiting time before you board.
Carry small notes
Keep small pounds for tips, boats, toilets and tea. Cards work in hotels and at site ticket offices.
Taxis
Agree the fare and what it includes before you get in. inDrive works in Aswan; hotels can arrange cars for the day.
Dress modestly
Upper Egypt is conservative: cover shoulders and knees in towns, villages and mosques.
Pack for two seasons
Bring a warm layer for 6am starts and balloon flights, plus a hat and sunscreen for midday.
Drink bottled water
Use bottled or filtered water and go easy on salads for the first day or two.
Luxor and Aswan are used to visitors and generally relaxed. Expect persistent touts at the big sites, keep valuables close, check your government’s travel advice and confirm entry rules for your passport.
