Before you go
Hire a car
It is the easiest way to see Dhofar. Main roads are good; mountain roads are steep and winding.
Dress modestly
Cover shoulders and knees in the souq, towns and mosques. Swimwear belongs at the beach or pool.
Friday rhythm
The weekend is Friday and Saturday. Shops close around Jumu’ah and many sites keep shorter Friday hours.
Respect the sun
October middays are hot and humid. Sightsee early, rest at lunch and go out again after four.
Watch the sea
Swim only where it is calm and never past breaking waves. Rip currents are common on open beaches.
Animals on the road
Camels and cattle graze freely in the hills. Slow down on bends and after dark.
Ask before photos
Ask before photographing people, especially women and families, and avoid palaces and military sites.
Cash for the stalls
Cards work in hotels, malls and most restaurants; carry rials for fruit stalls, the souq and small entry fees.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport; coverage drops in parts of the mountains and the desert.
Pack a light layer
Evenings in the hills are cooler than the coast, and malls and cars are strongly air-conditioned.
Salalah is safe and friendly. Follow local laws and dress codes, and check the entry rules for your passport before you travel.
