Before you go

Salzburg Card
One free entry to most sights and museums plus city buses (not the S-Bahn). Worth it for two busy days.
Mozart combo
A joint ticket for the Birthplace and the Mozart Residence costs €25 for adults.
Hallstatt by train
Hallstatt station is across the lake; the ferry waits for the trains, but check the last boat back.
Book the snow
Check Untersberg and ski-area lift status on the morning; wind and fresh snow can close lifts.
Dress warmly
Thermal layers, a waterproof coat, hat and gloves; boots with grip for icy cobbles.
Sundays
Most shops close on Sundays; museums and cafés stay open.
Cards and cash
Cards work almost everywhere, but keep euros for the Hallstatt ferry and small kiosks.
Short days
Daylight runs from about 07:20 to 17:20 in early February; plan outdoor sights for the morning.
Fortress hours
Open 09:30–17:00 in winter with last entry 30 minutes before closing; go up by early afternoon for daylight views.
Respect Hallstatt
People live in every house you photograph. Stay on public paths and keep the village quiet.
Salzburg is safe and easy to walk. Watch for ice on bridges and steps, and check Schengen entry rules for your passport before you travel.
