Gingerbread, bredele and warm drinks on cold squares

Christmas tastes to try

Bredele
Small Alsatian Christmas biscuits in dozens of shapes: anise, cinnamon stars, butter spritz. Sold by the bag at markets and bakeries.
Pain d’épices
Honey gingerbread, glazed, filled or plain. A good gift that travels well.
Manala
A brioche shaped like a little man, eaten around Saint Nicholas’s Day (6 December). Children love it with hot chocolate.
Bretzel
The Alsatian pretzel, soft inside and salted on top. Choose plain or butter, not the lardon versions.
Roasted chestnuts
Hot from the stall in a paper cone; simple and warming.
Hot apple juice
The easy alcohol-free alternative to mulled wine, often spiced with cinnamon.

Pastry & tea rooms

Kougelhopf
The tall, fluted Alsatian brioche, studded with raisins and almonds; best for breakfast. Ask whether the raisins were soaked in alcohol.

Know the classics
Choucroute, baeckeoffe and tarte flambée are the famous dishes; all are traditionally made with pork and often with wine. Ask for vegetarian or fish versions where offered, or eat at the halal restaurants above.
Muslim traveller note: traditional winstubs are cosy but pork-heavy. Choose the halal places in the Muslim notes, or fish and vegetarian dishes, and ask about lardons, wine and gelatine.
