Before you go

Book rooms early
December weekends sell out months ahead. A weekday stay is calmer and cheaper.
Go on a Monday or Tuesday
The city itself recommends early-week visits; Wednesdays and weekends are the busiest.
Expect security checks
Bridges onto the Grande Île have access checks during market hours. Travel light and keep bags small.
Use the tram
Lines A, C, D and F serve the market squares; buy tickets at stops or in the CTS app.
Watch your bags
Pickpockets work the crowded squares. Use a zipped cross-body bag.
Dress for cold and damp
Expect 0–6°C, drizzle and sometimes frost. Warm layers, a hat and waterproof shoes.
Toilets
Free public toilets are spread across the Grande Île during the markets.
Market hours
Chalets open daily from 11:30 to 21:00 in recent years, and close at 18:00 on 24 December.
26 December is a holiday
In Alsace, 26 December (St Stephen’s Day) is a public holiday as well as Christmas Day.
Cards everywhere
Cards work at most chalets, but carry some coins for small stalls.
Service is included
Restaurant prices include service; rounding up is enough.
Use the StrasApp
The city’s app has the market map, programme and practical information.
Strasbourg is generally safe, but crowds draw pickpockets. Check the entry rules for your passport before you travel.
