Before you go

Pay in lari
Prices may be shown in dollars or euros, but payment must be in lari. Cards work widely in the city; carry cash for markets and villages.
Use app taxis
Avoid hailing taxis in the street. Book through an app or your hotel, and check the seatbelts.
Ride the metro
Two lines run from about 06:00 to midnight, linking the centre, Marjanishvili and Avlabari cheaply.
Avoid protests
Demonstrations around Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue continue, especially on Saturday evenings. Keep away and follow local news.
Carry your passport
You are expected to show ID when asked; keep a copy on your phone as well.
Wear grippy shoes
Old-town cobbles are steep and slippery, and many hotels have stairs and no lift.
Layers for the hills
Afternoons are warm, but evenings are cool and the mountains can be cold; bring a warm jacket for Kazbegi.
Ask before photos
Ask before photographing people, priests and services inside churches.
Drones
Recording drones must be registered in person with the Civil Aviation Agency; most visitors are better leaving them at home.
Stay connected
Buy a local SIM or an eSIM on arrival; WhatsApp is the easiest way to reach drivers and guesthouses.
Tbilisi is generally safe, with low crime, but watch for pickpockets in crowded places. Check the entry rules for your passport and the latest travel advice before you go.
