Do not overpack museum days: fewer stops and more outdoor breaks.

Byzantine & Ottoman Trabzon

Sümela Monastery
A Greek Orthodox monastery built into a cliff at about 1,200 m in Altındere Valley National Park, with frescoes in its rock church. Open all year; the MüzeKart is accepted, and the national park charges its own entry fee.

Hagia Sophia
Look for the carved reliefs on the porches and the frescoes of the narthex, then climb the hill to the 1427 bell tower.

Atatürk Pavilion
A white villa of 1890 in a pine-wooded garden, where Atatürk stayed; the rooms keep period furniture and photographs. Open daily, 09:00–19:00 in summer; check autumn hours.

Ortahisar walls & Kanuni Park
The walled heart of medieval Trebizond, with a small park among the old houses inside the walls.

Bedesten
The 16th-century covered market hall of the bazaar, with its heavy octagonal upper storey.

Taş Han & Alaca Han
Two old caravanserais in the bazaar: Taş Han of 1533 around a courtyard, and 18th-century Alaca Han, which gives its name to the best-kept part of the market.

The city’s story told through film, objects and everyday things; a good first stop.

Ortahisar History Museum
A small museum in a restored house on a bastion above Tabakhane Bridge; labels are in Turkish.

Architecture walk

The tannery bridge into the walled city, with the first view of the citadel walls.

Zağnos Bridge & Valley Park
A bridge with Roman or Byzantine roots over a valley turned into parkland below the walls.
Meydan to the bazaar
Walk Kunduracılar Street from the square, past İskender Paşa Mosque, into the bazaar lanes, the Bedesten and Çarşı Mosque.
Read the valley houses
In the highlands, notice the timber houses on stone bases and the small raised granaries, built for steep ground and heavy rain.

Hamsi supper
Sümela is extremely popular and closed briefly in 2026 after rockfalls before reopening. Go at opening, check the day’s status, and wear good shoes: the last stretch is a stone path and steps. The nearby Vazelon and Kuştul monasteries are closed for works.
