Why Zanzibar?

Stone Town · beaches · reef · spices · forest
Days in the low 30s, nights around 25°C and warm, clear water. January can bring a passing shower, but it is one of the island’s best beach months.

What makes it special

An Omani-Swahili old town
Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, mixes Arab, Indian, African and European building traditions in a maze of lanes.
Doors worth the walk
Carved Zanzibari doors, some with brass studs and Qur’anic verses, mark the old merchant houses.
A Muslim island
About 98% of Zanzibaris are Muslim. The adhan sets the rhythm of the day and local food is halal.
Spice island
Cloves made Zanzibar rich; nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper still grow in the farms inland.
Two kinds of beach
Calm, swimmable water in the far north and wide tidal lagoons on the east coast.
A reef within reach
Mnemba Atoll’s conservation area has turtles, reef fish and dolphins in deeper water.
Rare monkeys
The Zanzibar red colobus lives only here, in and around Jozani forest.
A Gulf connection
Centuries of Omani rule left forts, palaces and family ties; flydubai, Qatar Airways and Oman Air fly in from the Gulf.
