Choose what to see — don’t try to see everything
Do not overpack museum days: fewer stops and more outdoor breaks.
Mountain stories
Kirchplatz
Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis
An underground museum on the church square with rebuilt old houses, a relief map of the climbing routes and the rope that broke on the first ascent in 1865. Usually open in the afternoon; check winter hours.

Old village
Hinterdorf
More than 30 barns, stores and houses in the old quarter, built from the 16th to 18th centuries in larch on stone slabs raised against mice. Some are more than 500 years old.

3,883 m · three lifts
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
Europe’s highest mountain station at 3,883 m, with a viewing platform over 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers, a cinema lounge and a Glacier Palace carved 15 m into the ice.

A village walk
Bahnhofstrasse
The main street runs from the station to the church; shops, bakeries and hotel fronts in timber and stone.
Kirchplatz
The church square, with the museum below ground. Look up for the classic Matterhorn view over the roofs.
Hinterdorfstrasse
Narrow lanes of blackened barns. Walk slowly and do not climb on the buildings; most are private.
Along the Vispa
Follow the river through the village; its bridges frame the Matterhorn, best in the last light of the day.
Modern design
Trockener Steg
Matterhorn Glacier Ride
Cabins from Trockener Steg to the Glacier Paradise in about 11 minutes. Crystal Ride cabins have a glass floor that clears after a few minutes; extra ticket.

Testa Grigia · 3,480 m

Stargazing on clear nights
High stations are cold, windy and short of oxygen. Dress for −15°C or colder at 3,000 m and above, move slowly and come down if anyone feels dizzy or sick.
